Workshops to Train and Empower RCOs

By JustLaws (other events)

4 Dates Through Jan 17, 2017

ABOUT ABOUT

North of Washington Avenue Coalition and JustLaws present a series of four strategy workshops to train and empower RCOs

By attending all four workshops, RCO leaders will learn the answers to these questions:

  • What are the key zoning concepts/code provisions you need to understand?

  • What should you be looking for when you're presented with zoning plans and drawings?

  • Why should your RCO develop a strategic approach to zoning?

  • What does it take to make an effective presentation to the Zoning Board?

  • How can your RCO negotiate effective zoning provisos and community benefits agreements?

  • How can your RCO stop a project in its tracks when you can't say yes no matter what?

We have room for up to two of your RCO leaders to attend each of the four workshops

All workshops will take place at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia located at 2125 Chestnut Street from 7pm to 9pm

The ticket price to attend each of the workshops is $5

We are also offering a special discount package to encourage you to attend all four workshops. The special four workshop package costs $15 and entitles an RCO leader to attend all four workshops. This special discount is only available if you purchase your ticket on or before November 29, 2016.

We encourage you to purchase your tickets online using a credit or debit card.

You are also welcome to purchase tickets at the door with cash or a personal check (we aren't able to accept credit cards for purchases at the door).

Featured presenters:

Steve Masters, Esquire:

Steve Masters, President of JustLaws, is a licensed attorney with close to four decades of experience in community empowerment law, legislative drafting, lobbying and grassroots advocacy. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University and his J.D. from Boston University School of Law.

Steve has been a featured presenter for the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations, leading a workshop on “Negotiating Community Benefits Agreements” at the 2015 Philadelphia Community Development Leadership Institute and joining a panel on “Managing Relationships Between Developers and Community” at the second annual Community Development Symposium.

Prior to starting his own law firm JustLaws in 2012, where he concentrates on zoning and local government law, Steve served as Council President Anna Verna’s zoning lawyer for over ten years, helping developers and concerned community groups settle their differences and reach community benefits agreements that stood the test of time. When negotiated solutions weren't possible, Steve turned to the courts to win decisive legal victories for his clients.

Steve is the chair of the board of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia and is a past board member of West Mount Airy Neighbors.

Michael Hauptman, AIA:

Michael Hauptman received his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is a partner in the architectural firm of Brawer and Hauptman.

In 2009, Michael was appointed by Mayor Nutter to the Board of Directors of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation where he serves on the Planning Committee and the Design Review Committee which is overseeing the Master Plan for the central waterfront.

Michael chairs the Queen Village Zoning Committee and is active in Philadelphia urban affairs. He was responsible for co-authoring the design guidelines and leading the effort that made Queen Village Philadelphia's first Neighborhood Conservation District.

He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Design and has conducted workshops for Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC), Temple University Institute for Continuing Studies, the Jewish Community Centers Adult Studies Program, Women's Collaborative Rehabilitation Program, Design on the Delaware and several neighborhood civic associations.

The NOWAC/JustLaws workshops are partially funded by a generous grant from the Bread and Roses Community Fund
